I'm one of those independent women whose vote is up for grabs. I'm not happy with either Obama or McCain, so for me, the tie-breaker is the VP. Biden as VP doesns't thrill me, but he brings much to the table to help round out the ticket. BUT, I'm really tempted to be offended by McCain's choice. Maybe when I find out more about Palin, I'll feel differently, but I was shocked when I saw her and heard her. Now, Kay Bailey would have garnered my respect, but a hockey mom doesn't do much for me. We'll see.

Gee...I just never thought the anti-Christ would be so....gentlemanly, intelligent, and anti-war. At this rate, Armageddon will be kind of dull, don't you think?

I think some folks forget that the Abilene Reporter News is not obligated to provide this forum. If a person didn't know anything about Abilene and looked over this site, what impression would it give? Would you want to bring a family into the environment portrayed if you were contemplating a move? It would really be nice to have a forum available for thoughtful and productive discussion about issues facing our community. People can respectfully agree to disagree and not resort to personal attacks.

School should be no different from church or a movie theater. At the very minimum, silence the phones and put them away.

Kids can dream up all kinds of mischief during the school day using their cell phones. They can plan to meet in the restrooms, keep arguments going, take photos of...all kinds of things, call mom and have her show up at school in a rage when nobody knows what the heck is going on, and distract kids from the business of learning.

During the last school year, one student's sister sent the girl a text message at school telling the girl that her grandmother had just died...and nobody knew what was wrong. Imagine the poor girl's reaction to that text. A call to the school with the information delivered by a counselor would have been much more compassionate.

I know we have to adjust with the times, but cell phone use must be limited at school.

Please, just move over and let me pass if you have time to just poke along.

And get rid of that V10 if you want to save gas. Geez!

From everything I've seen, Obama supports the troops -- just not the Commander-in-Chief. And the troops don't have any choice but to go where they're sent - whether they agree with the politics behind the mission or not.

We are actually drilling in the United States. The issue of drilling has become whether or not to drill off shore and in areas that are under federal protection -- some from the days of Theodore Roosevelt's presidency. Yes, drilling for oil is an extremely messy and toxic business and it destroys the environment and wreaks havoc with both wildlife and undersea habitats.

What we need to do is begin restricting our imports of foreign oil and work on developing alternate energy sources. If we had been shoring up our domestic production during the good ol' days when oil went to less than $10.00 a barrel, we wouldn't be in this situation. During those many years, oil equipment was rusting beside highways by the ton because the cost of drilling far exceeded revenue produced. We knew then that at some point we would be at the mercy of OPEC, but the politically correct thing to do was to keep importing lots of oil to keep prices depressed. When OPEC didn't want to be our friends anymore and China began sucking up resources, the infrastructure for domestic production was gone and oil producers had to start all over again -- and that is an ongoing and expensive situation. Again, the demand for steel in China is huge, and we've had to compete with the Chinese (and the areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina)for resources. And please don't confuse the huge oil companies (often drilling overseas) with small oil producers that are the lifeblood of West Texas.

Nobody takes into account that companies in the States generally pay relatively good wages and contribute to workman's comp, health insurance, employee retirement, and social security. Additionally, companies are required to pay hefty premiums for bonding and liability insurance on any and all equipment. All those things are wonderful things for our workers, but they add enormously to the cost of production. In almost all other oil-producing countries, the cost of production is minimal compared to what it costs here. In addition, a dry hole -- and there are lots of those -- can cost millions without a single barrel of oil produced. That makes drilling for oil a risky venture, and nobody shares in that loss except the investors and oil producers. Again, in the Middle East, dry holes are rare because oil is so abundant. Basically, the problem is much more complicated than it first seems.

So, with the rest of the world industrializing at a rapid pace -- Chine and India come to mind -- we must reduce our dependence on foreign oil in order to provide economic stability and security here at home. The question is, how do we proceed and at what cost? The bottom line is that we in America will see our way of life drastically altered because of high energy costs if we don't work to decrease our demand through conservation and the creation of alternate sources of energy.

Someone who says we have a "defuct" school system is criticizing the AISD? Defunct, Kelly, defunct.(kelly_41_2000)

Anyway, I applaud the AISD for searching for ways to help students succeed. Not everyone is willing or able to attend college, and the idea behind the magnet school is to make the Enlgish, math, social studies, and science classes relevant to a job students want to pursue. In addition, students will learn a skill that will make them employable (or well on their way to attaining that goal)once they graduate. I applaud Mr. Falcioni for putting a suggestion out there. Opening dialogue about new ways to do things often leads to innovative new solutions to problems. Bravo!

Too many people in Abilene view red lights as suggestions and not commands. I cringe at the thought of some innocent person just driving along following the rules then being killed by someone who plows through a red light. This could happen to you, your child, your mother, your spouse, or your best friend. I think a friendly reminder in the form of a hefty fine would get attention faster than anything. Best of all, our police officers' time can be utilized in other ways.
