ladyjane- just because people live on the southside doesn't mean everythings hunky dory. I, as a youth, was in to drugs and ALL my friends, who lived in nice houses on the southside, were the suppliers of those drugs because they could afford it. They also were the ones braking in houses and businesses. My husband is black and grew up in the worst of places for racism, south Ga., where drugs and proverty are running rampt and decided thats not what his life was going to be like. So before you start coming to these little conclusions, you needed to look at all aspects of life for everyone. Just because your a different color or you live a "poor" life doesn't mean you can't overcome that kinda thing. And while I will agree that Abilene has gotten worst over the years as far a crime goes....it still isn't a bad place to live. Everwhere has crime. I just hope that parents will take more time to teach thier children right from wrong.

No kidding....imagine if someone was unstable sitting next to you in class and he or she gets a bad grade on a test and just goes crazy with a gun because it was legal to have it on campus. My husband and I have debated this topic time and time again...I just don't think it's the answer.

This story was pointless. I'm glad you don't smoke Mr. Mathis, but was it really that important that you had to write about it?

cadechar...I agree. Most of the people on here are not "polite, respectable people who don't wish to mouth off when we don't agree with others." I work retail and most people I come in contact with in Abilene are rude and disrespectful.

Don't know much about politics but I have to agree with Tumbleweed and Orphan. I get so tired of seeing people who are overweight using scooters because they chose not to walk in the first place or people, (like my grandmother for instance), who have had lung cancer and by the grace of God, were helped but still smoke while they have an oxygen tank on. Come on people get it together! I, for one, would choose not to pay for people who do not take thier own health seriously....
