Big Country area ninth grader Faith Walters earned first place at the State Bible Drill, held May 3 at the Baptist General Convention of Texas headquarters in Dallas. She will advanced to the National Drill on June 20, in Atlanta, Ga. Walters competed in the Jr. Youth category for seventh to ninth graders, and has consistently scored a perfect score in five drills this season, adding enough bonus points to win each drill. The state drill included 34 students who advanced from eight regional drills throughout Texas, to compete in four drills for the first round, with the top eight scores advancing to a runoff drill. All eight advancing had perfect scores of 300 or more going in to the final drill. Walters, who tied for second place in 2007 at the State Drill, was in third place after round one with a score of 310. The competition was so close, it was impossible to know the outcome until the trophies were distributed at the awards ceremony. She received 308 points to take first, and a certificate for a perfect score in both drills. Walters, in her sixth year of Bible Drill, is a member of First Baptist Church Albany. She is the daughter of Rob and Sasha Walters of Albany.
