Hey! Did you happen to notice anything different on the morning of Nov. 5, the day after the election? For instance, Nov. 4 was Election Day, and it was rather hectic, to say the least. You might have been wondering if the world would survive. But as you awoke Wednesday morning and peeped outside, the world was still standing, the sun was still shining brightly and everything seemed peaceful. Then came the realization that Sen. Early in what became the Great Depression, John Maynard Keynes was asked if anything similar had ever happened. "Yes," he replied, "it was called the Dark Ages and it lasted 400 years." It did take 25 years, until November 1954, for the Dow to return to the peak it reached in September 1929. So caution is sensible concerning calls for a new New Deal.< Full story »

I’m a grandchild of the civil rights movement. I can’t remember it personally, but my mom can. She was not on the front lines of the struggle, but it nonetheless defined so much of her early adulthood: the slow realization that the way she had been raised in Jim Crow Alabama was wrong, the growing understanding that her Christian faith was incompatible with the racist views of the family she loved, etc. Full story »
