Please use correct pronunciation of Gustav
I know that a hurricane is not a nice thing to talk about, but since they give them names, I think it would be nice if the media at least used the correct pronunciation.
Gustav is not pronounced "goo-stoff." It is easy to see if you look at the word it becomes "gust," like gust of wind, for example! The "av" is pronounced as the word "of." So, it is easy to see the correct way to pronounce the word and as the dictionary says: Gustav or Gustof.
Since this is my middle name and the names of my uncle and cousin, I feel offended by the media's misuse. I remember when the city Potosi was once called "potasee," and I know how they felt. Our local news folks don't need to accept pronunciations used by the national media. They should correct them.
Joseph Johnson

Seriously? Do you know how often people get the last name "Taillon" correct? And no, it's not tail-un. Grow some thicker skin please.

I don't even give people my last name anymore because no one can get it right... I hope this name issue will just BLOW OVER for you! :)

Hanna, Ike and Josephine are blowing in right behind Gustav, hopefully they can pronounce those names correctly.

People even say New Orleans incorrectly. Anyone who has ever been there knows the correct way to say it is "Nawlins". I know because I was stationed in Mississippi Gulf cost, pronounced by the locals as Missipi Guf Coast. I just hope Mr. Johnson (pronounced john-son) can get over this and move on with his life or change his middle name to something everyone can pronounce, like Pisquale or Heudo.

Yeah, because THAT'S the most important thing we have to worry about.
Sheesh!

Sorry, but proper names have no set pronunciation. One may pronounce a proper name any way one pleases.
BTW, GOOSTAV is an accepted pronunciation of the name. You just don't happen to pronounce it that way.

This is funny, and I have to say the most absurd thing I've read in the past few days. People are going to butcher names no matter what it is. I have an incredibly simple last name, a word that most people even use fairly often, however they still butcher. Get over it, there are more important things to worry about than how the name of a hurricane is pronounced.

Now that was funny!
To quote Mr. Johnson, "It's easy to see" that some people have way too much time on their hands, and very few real important things to worry about.
Joseph Goo-stoff....step away from the keyboard...take a deep breath...and relax.

Okay, okay....ALL Hurricanes MUST be 1st grade story-reader names....The next one will be called BILL, then SUZY, JOHN, LUCY and then TOM. Names like Armondo, Estaban, and Doofenswartz are unacceptable because people cannot say them all the same way.

On the subject of hurricanes, the really big, huge Catagory 5 storms should be named "Tiny". Just a thought.

well then why don't we just name then Hurricane 1...2..3... then, just maybe, everyone will pronounce it right.

I am baffled that Goofoff would take the time to write this inane letter. I am bewildered that the ARN would print it.

Are you kidding me?!? People mispronounce my name all of the time! The thing is, there ARE two ways to prnounce my name so I don't get offended. Technically it can be pronounced both ways - it's the preference of the person speaking it. Keep in mind every region has a different accent as well and it would be foolish to cry every time someone goofed up a name.

Isn't this letter from the same dude who has gone by Sawyer, Johnny and now Joseph Johnson?
Seems like he sneaked one by the city and got a street named for his current wife, spelled so differently no one will ever get it right!
Just go back to calling yourself "Dave Andrews" and most people will remember who you are.

People have now had a month to comment on Joseph Johnson's well motivated notice on the correct English pronunciation of his name. Phonetic consistency is one of the most important ingredients in successful communication, and what Mr. Johnson wrote is educational and important. What is amazing is that there is such a large amount of Abilene people - over 20 of them - who pounce on a nice man like Mr. Johnson, who is trying to make a good point, and tell him to "get a life" etc, while they all obviously spend a large amount of their time being cruel, nasty, condescending and rude to nice people. If I add uneducated and ignorant will this be removed? Appalling replies! Baffling stupidity! And don't bother to try to bully me, you guys, because I won't be adding anything to the above. Have fun being mean! Or try empathy (duh, wunderr wutt at meenz?).

Why can't people try to be nice, respect Mr. Johnson's correct and justified request to have his name pronounced properly and find better things to do than pounce on a nice man with a good cause expressed kindly?
Why would over 20 people take all this time spewing out so much nasty, condescending, sarcastic, insulting and cruel input?
Anyone know what empathy means? If not, please do not reply to this with more bullying and evil attitudes! That won't faze me the slightest coming from people like the above.
Do any Abilene gentlemen and gentlewomen ever read this?
