Local Sports Roundup 10.15.08

The Abilene High Lady Eagles won in four games against North Crowley Tuesday night, 19-25, 25-10, 25-18, 25-21.

Tuesday's match was the first time during district play that the Lady Eagles dropped a game in a match they won.

"We definitely didn't play at the same level that we played Weatherford on Friday," coach Didi Pierce said. "Our passing wasn't as good and that took us out of the game offensively."

The team had 16 aces overall. Caroline Cleveland had six aces and 11 kills, and Libby Sinclair had four aces and 11 kills.

Abilene High, now 29-6 overall and 8-1 in district, is off on Friday and will face Burleson next Tuesday.

Wylie falls at Graham

The Wylie Lady Bulldogs fell to 21-16 on the season and 2-4 in District 2-3A Tuesday with a 25-21, 25-15, 25-12 loss to Graham.

"We were very competitive in the first game, and I felt like we were focused," Wylie coach LeAnn Thomsen said. "But our passing started slipping, and I feel that was the difference in the game. Graham's defense and passing was phenominal."

Errors in all phases plagued the Lady Bulldogs as they racked up 19 passing errors and eight missed serves.

"I'm OK losing when we play good, but I'm not OK losing with how we played tonight," Thomsen said.

One bright spot for Wylie was the play of sophomore outside hitter Natalie Davis, who had a team-high 10 kills.

The team's comfortable lead gave ACHS coach Rhonda Davis a chance to rotate a number of players in, and she said the win was a result of a good team effort.

"We had a day off, coming in from a three-day holiday and I told them I wanted our goal to be to pass the ball better on serve receive," Davis said. "I felt like the day off didn't hurt us and they came in ready to play."

The Lady Panthers return to action Thursday, when they play their last home match against Watauga Harvest. The team will be honoring its two seniors, Emilee Davis and Kelsey Hancock, during that match.
