The Abilene High Eagles continued rolling through the fall tennis season Tuesday with an 18-1 victory at Cooper.
The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in Class 5A by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association, swept the doubles matches and took all six girls singles matches in straight sets to improve to 19-0.
Despite the final margin, AHS coach Fred Scott said, the Cougars gave the Eagles plenty of competition. Five matches went to a third set.
"It's always tough playing the crosstown people," Scott said. "We had several matches that were really close that just went our way late. I was just pleased with our kids that they fought the whole way through. Our boys really played well today and we're fired up about that.
"Now we're just looking to Saturday against Grapevine. They're supposed to have a really good team. Hopefully, we'll come out with the intensity against them that we did against Cooper."
Cougars coach Trance Rosenquist said his team, which is ranked No. 7 in Class 4A, also benefited from the match. Cooper (11-5) resumes District 4-4A play Saturday at Wolfforth Frenship.
"The reason we play this match is to get ourselves prepared for the regional tournament," he said. "Abilene High is a top-five team in 5A. There's no sense in not using an advantage like that when you've got them across town.
"They beat us pretty bad today, but they're a very team good all the way from top to bottom. They're going to go far this year, just like I hope that we are."
Cooper's lone win came at the very end as Max Jeffers outlasted Austin Holley 6-4, 4-6, 10-2 in the No. 5 boys singles match. The match was one of three in boys singles decided on 10-point tiebreakers because of encroaching darkness.
"It would have been nice to play out a third set," Rosenquist said. "I'm glad we did get one win. I haven't been (shut out) yet as a coach, so I am happy about that. Max Jeffers took care of his singles match.
"I'm proud of all my kids. We've just got some work to do in the next couple of weeks before the regional tournament."
Scott said it was nice to get all matches finished even though several singles matches were played in twilight at the end.
"We got a little bit of a late start, not anybody's fault, we just did," he said. "We were lucky to get them all in and I was glad that we did."
