Local sports roundup 10.13.08

Tarleton State's Travis Evans rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns to lead the No. 19-ranked Texans to a 37-16 win over No. 22 Midwestern State on Saturday in Wichita Falls.

The Texans, who have now won their last six contests against MSU, broke open a close contest with 21 third-quarter points.

Evans scored a pair of 3-yard touchdown runs in the quarter as the Texans took advantage of a missed field goal and a diving catch by Jacob Rowe on a tipped pass at the MSU 10-yard line to turn a 13-10 halftime advantage into a commanding 24-point lead.

Tarleton quarterback Scott Grantham completed 13-of-27 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns including a 59-yard strike to Eric Foreman and a 9-yard toss to Tanner Maher.

Foreman paced the Texans with four receptions for 91 yards.

Tarleton State hosts Eastern New Mexico next weekend.

CROSS COUNTRY

AHS, Winters do well in ACU race

Teams from Abilene and Winters high schools gave strong showings at the ACU Classic meet held Saturday.

In the three-mile race, Abilene High's boys finished first in the Class 3A-5A division, while the Winters boys finished first in the Class A-2A division.

Reid Strong of Wylie High School was the overall boys winner in the three-mile race in 3A-5A, while Winters' Harrison Roberts won the small-school race.

In the girls divisions, AHS won the team honors, while AHS runner Jourdan Ellis finished first in the two-mile race in Class 3A-5A.

Clyde won the girls Class A-2A division, with Winters in second place. Jessica Rodriguez of Winters was the overall winner.

SOCCER

ACU ties Sunday

Abilene Christian and Northeastern State ended 110 minutes of soccer action with a 0-0 tie Sunday in Oklahoma.

Junior goalie Crissy Lawson recorded six saves for ACU and narrowly missed a shutout. She had to leave the match in the first half and freshman Elliott London took over for 2:36. On the other side, the RiverHawks' Patricia Nardy recorded a shutout with seven saves for NSU.

The Wildcats got off 15 shots and seven on the goal. NSU had nine shots as a team and six on goal.

The Wildcats moved to 5-5-2 on the season with a 1-2-1 record in league play.

VOLLEYBALL

Tarleton State wins

Tarleton State defeated Central Oklahoma 25-18, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22 on Saturday in Stephenville.

Tarleton improves to 16-6 overall and 6-1 in the Lone Star Conference.
