Don’t freeze, winterize your pets now

We winterize our cars. We winterize our homes. It’s also time to winterize our pets. That’s right, even our pets. As these days of October continue to be mild, the chill of November won’t be far beyond. Now is the right time to take the necessary steps to make sure your pet is warm enough when the first “blue norther” arrives. Do you recall the last year or two when you decided to build a shelter after the weather outside had already dropped to the freezing mark? Prepare the pet shelter now. Don’t wait.

In order to be in compliance with the city of Abilene ordinance regarding the welfare of your pets, you must provide proper shelter for each. The shelter must have a roof, three sides and a floor. It must be sufficiently enclosed to keep the rain and snow from drenching the animals. Your pet needs and deserves to be dry, especially in the winter. If you have more than one dog, you must have sufficient shelter for each dog.

One relatively inexpensive item to help warm your outdoor pet is hay. It can be purchased from a local agricultural supply company. My experience with these companies is that they are always willing to assist. Your pet will be able to snuggle down and receive some relief from the elements. Avail yourself of this opportunity to visit one of the friendly dealers in Abilene.

When temperatures continue to dip below freezing for an extended length of time, it would be good to allow your pet to enter your house or garage for a while to break the chill. Yes, I know, animals adapt to their surroundings. So do people, but extreme cold is another matter.

How about the food you are serving your pet? Is it wholesome? Does it provide the necessary nutrients required or is it only filler? Take a few minutes to consult your veterinarian for suggestions relating to a food that is right for your pet. The proper food can give your pet exactly what it needs in order to develop a healthy coat and body fat to more easily survive a cruel, cold winter.

It is the goal of Animal Services to assist with the welfare of animals throughout the upcoming winter season. Please make every effort to take care of your own pets. Also, if you witness neglect of animals, especially the lack of shelter, please contact the Abilene Animal Shelter at (325) 698-0085.
