Churches band together to aid hurricane victims
Representatives of several local churches have joined to gather donations for victims of Hurricane Ike.
Members of Highland Church of Christ, Hillcrest Church of Christ, St. Paul United Methodist Church, Potosi Baptist Church, Lytle South Baptist, Elmdale Baptist, Wylie Baptist, Holy Family Catholic Church, Southside Baptist, First Central Presbyterian, Minter Lane Church of Christ, Crosspoint Fellowship and the Abilene Baptist Association have put together a relief effort.
Randy Perkins, mission ministry leader at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, said in a news release that many of the hurricane victims in the Beaumont-Port Arthur-Orange area were not covered by flood insurance.
He said he expects relief efforts will include gathering and shipping needed items as well as sending teams of workers who will assist with cleaning up the damaged homes and helping with rebuilding.
The disaster relief project will be kicked off with a two-day solicitation of special-need items to be held at various Abilene retail locations, including Walgreens and Wal-Mart stores, on Oct. 25 and 26.
Another area of need is for computers to access online sources of disaster assistance. If you have a computer to donate, contact Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. These items will be delivered to the targeted area on Oct. 16.
