ACU tennis player wins region
TENNIS
Abilene Christian's Irene Squillaci won the Wilson/ITA South Central Region women's tennis title in Abilene on Sunday, while a Northeastern State duo took the doubles title.
Squillaci won the regional singles championship with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over top-ranked Zuzanna Osinska of Northeastern State.
Osinska and Emina Spirtovic teamed to beat Squillaci and Jaclyn Walker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 for the doubles crown.
Squillaci will represent the region in the singles flight of the ITA Small College National Championship Tournament Oct. 16-19 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. Osinska and Spirtovic will represent the region in the doubles tournament.
SOCCER
ACU soccer shut out again
After keeping each other scoreless until the final minute, the women's soccer teams at Abilene Christian and Midwestern State saw Sunday's game come down to the final shot.
Midwestern's Jordan Smith scored with 59 seconds left on a pass from Brittany Subia to win Sunday in Abilene.
The loss drops the ACU Wildcats to 4-5-1 on the season, and 0-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
Of ACU's 11 shots, only three were on the goal.
On the offensive end, MSU fired away at ACU goalie Crissy Lawson all afternoon. Lawson saved nine of 10 shots on goal.
Sunday marked the third-straight loss for the Wildcats -- all 1-0 losses.
The Wildcats will head to Oklahoma for a pair of LSC matches against East Central University on Friday and Northeastern State next Sunday.
VOLLEYBALL
Tarleton wins LSC match
Tarleton State University won its fourth Lone Star Conference match Saturday at home, defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Tarleton won 25-13, 21-25, 23-25, 26-24 and 15-9.
The Texanns improve to 13-6 overall, and 4-1 in the conference. Allison Hill had 14 kills and five blocks for Tarleton, while Shea McBrearty had 25 digs.
