Ball State cracks Top 25

At No. 25 in the AP college football poll, his alma mater, Ball State. The Cardinals (6-0) are ranked in the Top 25 for the first time.

After a week with few upsets, the top of media poll only underwent slight alterations.

Oklahoma was No. 1 with 51 first-place votes and 1,608 points, gaining a few points and top votes in its second week on top of the rankings this season.

No. 2 Alabama has 13 first-place votes and 1,537 points. Missouri moved up one spot to No. 3 after winning 52-17 at Nebraska.

LSU dropped a spot to No. 4 after an off week, and Texas remained No. 5. No. 6 Penn State and No. 7 Texas Tech held their spots. No. 8 Southern California and No. 9 BYU flip-flopped after USC's easy 44-10 victory against Oregon. Georgia moved up a spot to No. 10.

FOOTBALL: Gonzalez sets tight ends yardage record

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Kansas City's Tony Gonzalez broke the NFL's career record for yards receiving by a tight end Sunday.

Gonzalez entered the Chiefs' game at Carolina 3 yards shy of Shannon Sharpe's 5-year-old record of 10,060 yards. He surpassed the mark on Kansas City's second offensive series by catching a 6-yard pass from Damon Huard late in the first quarter.

The 12th-year pro and nine-time Pro Bowler has at least one reception in 120 straight games.

FOOTBALL: Pelini says he saw nothing dirty vs. Mizzou

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said he would try to contact Missouri coach Gary Pinkel to discuss Chase Daniel's comments about the Cornhuskers being a dirty team.

The Tigers star quarterback said a Nebraska player spit on him before Saturday night's game, which Missouri won 52-17. Daniel also told reporters after the game that Nebraska players threw footballs at the Tigers as they were warming up.

"I'm going to investigate it and find out because that's unacceptable if something like that happened," Pelini said. "And I would hope that the opposing coaching staff would let me know if something like that happened."

Pelini said he watched video of the game and saw nothing out of line.

FOOTBALL: Goodell staying out of Raiders dispute for now

HOUSTON -- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has not received a grievance from former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin in the wake of his bitter split with team owner Al Davis last week.

Davis said Tuesday that Kiffin was fired for cause, meaning the Raiders will not pay him for the remainder of the three-year deal worth about $6 million. Kiffin's agent, Gary Uberstine, said Kiffin will talk to the commissioner.

"No one ever likes to see a dispute like that happen," Goodell said. "Mr. Davis made it very clear he didn't like it. It was clear that coach Kiffin was uncomfortable under the current circumstances. It's something that's unfortunate. You don't want to see it happen."

Goodell expects a grievance to be filed, but added he would not intervene in the situation until he is asked to.

BASEBALL: Pirate goes from benchwarmer to award winner

PITTSBURGH -- Once center fielder Nate McLouth got off the Pittsburgh Pirates' bench this year, he wasn't about to return.

McLouth, the last Pirates position player to win a starting job during spring training, became the second player in three seasons to go from backup to Roberto Clemente Award winner.

McLouth was an unanimous winner of the award, which is presented annually by the Pittsburgh chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America to the Pirates player who best exemplifies the standard of excellence achieved by Clemente.

Pirates second baseman Freddy Sanchez won the award in 2006, when Sanchez began the season as a utility infielder, and repeated in 2007.

McLouth, a backup during his first three major league seasons, became an NL All-Star in his first season as a starter. He hit .276 with 26 home runs, 46 doubles and 94 RBIs, and added 23 stolen bases.

TENNIS: No. 1 Jankovic keeps winning

STUTTGART, Germany -- New No. 1 Jelena Jankovic won her second title in two weeks, defeating Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-4, 6-3 Sunday in the final of the Porsche Grand Prix.

Jankovic was assured of taking the top ranking Monday from Serena Williams regardless of the outcome of the final. She already held the No. 1 spot for one week in August.
