Philharmonic announces YASC winners

The Abilene Philharmonic recently announced the winners of the 2008 Young Artist Scholarship Competition, in the first year of the Philharmonic’s competition.

1. Christina Oaks, Cooper High School

2. Justin Lee Langford, Cooper High School

3. Elizabeth Kate Dannheim, Abilene Christian University

Oaks is 16 and plays the flute, studying under Jennifer Reece.

Langford is 15 and plays percussion, studying under Rebecca Baggenstoss.

Dannheim is 17 and plays bassoon, studying under Steven Ward.

Competition prizes awarded were: 1. $1,000; 2. $700; 3. $450. The three winners will apply these scholarship funds to music lessons, music camps or college tuition.

The competition started with 28 music students from the Abilene region, age 12-18. Six students were selected to return on May 1 to compete in the final round.
