Champions Classic reshuffles game lineup

Calif., Florida teams not coming

High school football teams from California and Florida will not compete in this year's Champions Classic games that kick off the 2008 football season in Abilene.

There will still be games each day Aug. 28-30 in Abilene. And, Abilene High and Cooper both will remain a part of the event.

According to a news release from the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau, two teams that previously were announced as part of the game lineup - Glades Central from Belle Glades, Fla., and Archbishop Riordan High School from San Francisco, Calif. - are not coming to Abilene.

According to the news release, a marketing firm that was hired to find sponsorship funds to pay for the teams' travel costs was unable to secure the money.

Instead, the following teams will play in Abilene:

- Aug. 28: Odessa Permian vs. Duncanville, 7 p.m.

- Aug. 29: Abilene High vs. Dunbar, 7:30 p.m.

- Aug. 30: Cooper vs. O.D. Wyatt of Fort Worth, 6 p.m.

Wonder why they switched the days Cooper and Abilene High are playing. Cooper was originally scheduled to play the Cali team on Friday night and now we get moved to Saturday night. ???
