Blues Festival at Play Faire Park
Local vocalist and musician Richard Burke, renowned for his operatic career, will present a Blues Festival to benefit Abilene Hope Haven Inc. from 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Play Faire Park on North Second Street.
Local artists Happy Fat, Doug Roysden, Evan Christian and Dave Hobbs will perform for an afternoon and evening of family friendly blues. Litl’ Rickey and the Blues Renewz will also perform. Concessions will be available.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children under 5.
Proceeds will benefit Abilene Hope Haven. Those attending are advised to bring lawn chairs.
‘Little Women’ at McMurry University
McMurry University’s Summer Dinner Theatre Season will present “Little Women” July 24-26, July 31 through Aug. 2 and Aug. 7-9 at McMurry’s Ryan Little Theatre. The program will be directed by Barry Smoot.
Tickets will be $12 for the show or $22 for dinner and the show. The box office is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For tickets and information, call (325) 793-3889.
Clyde writer included in new anthology
Sheryl L. Nelms, of Clyde, is included in the new anthology, “FAMILIES: The Frontline of Pluralism,” released by Wising Up Press and edited by Heather Tosteson and Charles D. Brockett. Her poem, “Heir Loom Hocked,” joins the more than 4,500 other poems, stories and articles by Nelms that have been published.
Nelms is originally from Marysville, Kan., and for the last 10 years has been the editor of “The Pen Woman Magazine,” the membership magazine of the National League of American Pen Women, of which she is a member. She is also a member of The Society of Southwestern Authors, the Trinity Arts Writers Association and the Abilene Writer’s Guild.
Mexican dinner at Abilene Adult Day Care
An All-You-Can-Eat Mexican Dinner will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Abilene Adult Day Care, 3518 S. 7th St. It will include enchiladas, rice, beans, tamales with chili, nachos, queso and a make-your-own taco bar. Homemade desserts and takeout will also be available.
The cost will be $6 for adults and $4 for children. All proceeds will benefit the Abilene Adult Day Care.
Belles and Beaus seeking participants
The Belles and Beaus program of the Abilene Philharmonic Guild is seeking eighth- and ninth-grade students and their parents to participate in the four-year service program.
The purpose of the program is to stimulate interest in the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, promote volunteerism, increase participation in the Philharmonic Guild and enhance the college application process of the participants.
Senior Belles and Beaus are recognized for their service to the Philharmonic at the annual Philharmonic Ball.
