Local bowlers bring home money from state tourney
The current standings for the 76 Texas State USBC Open Tournament that was bowled in San Antonio are in. Several Abilene bowlers will bring home money from the tournament.
The following were very close to taking first place in their division in doubles and singles events.
Bowling in Division 4-doubles scratch, Bobby Laird and Charles Laird only needed 45 more pins to take over first place. With a 1,230 total, they placed fourth, missing third by just three pins.
Bowling in Doubles Division 5, Lisa Steele and Kris Dosser turned in a 1,134 team score, needing only three more pins for second place and 109 for first place.
Bowling in Singles Division 4, scratch, Charles (Bryan) Laird did not need any extra pins to take first place. Laird bowled a 728 scratch three-game series to take first place. Efrain Rodriquez bowling in same division bowled a 636 to tie for eighth place. With only 92 pins separating first and eighth place, that tells you how close the scores were.
With the help of the 728 score in singles Charles (Bryan) Laird bowled a 1,920 all-event score to place second, needing only 11 more pins to tie for first place.
Bowling All-Events Division 5 scratch, Kris Dosser bowled a 1,764 total score, needing only 66 more pins to take first place.
It is really heartbreaking to only need only a few pins to walk away with first place and a lot of money. I do not know what they did but I always think of that 10 pin I missed, or a split that should have been a strike, or a badly rolled ball on a double. All these will cost big time.
Bobby Laird and Bryan Laird will bring home $324 for their fourth place win in doubles; Kris Dosser and Lisa Steele will split $336 for their third place doubles win; Pete Wylie placed 21st in singles to earn $128; Bryan Laird won big with his first place in singles, $450; Manzel McGhee placed 71st in singles for $52; Kris Dosser placed 26th in singles for $131; Pete Wylie placed 19th in All Events for $77; Bryan Laird placed second in All Events to win $275 and Kris Dosser placed fifth in All Events to earn $157.
Congratulations to all who entered the state tournament. Maybe you did not bring home money but you did the next best thing -- you brought home a bag full of memories.

I cannot remember a time when Lucy Jones and her family did not bowl. Bowling has always been a family thing, something they all enjoy.
Last week Lucy bowled her first 300 game. Maybe it was in a No Tap League, but you have to get the ball in the pocket 12 frames, with enough on it to carry all but one pin. Lucy is the first lady in Abilene to bowl a 300 no tap game.
She has two sisters -- Marye Steadman, who drives in from Eden to bowl with her sisters; and Jayne Norris, who has always been my bowling buddy. We use to say we were joined at the hip.
A few years ago, Jayne had to give up her bowling because of medical problems. It always seems something is missing to see Lucy and Marye on the lanes and see that Jayne is not with them. She has all the bowlers' prayers and love, and each of us are waiting for the time she will again join us on the lanes.
