McM's David wins another award

McMurry University's Derek David was named the NCAA Division III Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

David, who already earned player of the year awards from the American Baseball Coaches Association and D3Baseball.com, won the NCBWA award after he had a .432 batting average, 79 runs, 86 hits, 12 doubles, 26 home runs and 73 RBI this past season.

His 26 home runs during his senior season are an American Southwest Conference record and also the second-most in a season in NCAA Division III history.

David hit home runs in seven consecutive games, which surpassed the old mark of six straight games set in 1998.

David also helped McMurry win its first ASC Championship since 2004 and make an NCAA West Region appearance as the team finished 29-19.

Three ex-Cowboys on all-Sun Bowl team

Three former Hardin-Simmons University football players have been named to the 75th Anniversary All-Sun Bowl Team.

The team was selected to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Sun Bowl Association, which hosts the annual game in El Paso.

Two members of the 1943 HSU team that played in the game -- Tuscola's Ed Sprinkle, a tackle, and Camp Wilson, a halfback -- and Joe Biggs of the 1958 squad were named to the team.

Seventy-five players who have competed in the Sun Bowl were honored.
