Abilene Police Report: Child left in vehicle, suffers from heat exhaustion
From Abilene Police Sgt. Keith Shackleford:
On Monday, at about 5:26 p.m., Officer Justin Gates was dispatched to an injured subject call in the 1300 block of Barrow Street. Officer Gates found that the suspect, a 22-year-old Hispanic female, had left her 6-month-old child unattended in her vehicle while the suspect was in a nearby store. The child suffered from heat exhaustion and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. A report was worked for injury to a child, and the investigation continues.
Later, at about 5:45 p.m., Officer Jay Tollison was dispatched to a disturbance call in the 2900 block of Elm Street. Officer Tollison found the suspect, a 25-year-old white male, in the middle of the street trying to start a fight. The suspect was intoxicated and a danger to himself. The suspect was arrested for public intoxication.
If you have small children, please don't leave them unattended in a vehicle. It is against the law, but most importantly, temperatures inside a vehicle can quickly rise 25 or 30 degrees above the outside temperature. Take your children with you -- they are depending on you.

I can't believe someone could be so selfish and ignorant to leave their baby in the car while she shops. I don't care if she goes to the convenience store to buy a pack of gum, take the baby with you. And if that is too much trouble then maybe she wasn't responsible enough to have a child in the first place.

I just don't understand how people can do that to children. Especially the ones who forget that their children are in the backseat! :O !

Thank goodness they found the baby in time! There have been so many deaths this summer of children left in vehicles. I just don't understand how people can leave their defenseless babies locked in a hot car. What is on your mind that is more important than your child's life?!

I know this is pure Laziness. Thats it. Too much trouble.

WHAT? I'm confused. Was she arrested for leaving her baby in the car while she went shopping???
It states plain as day, "It is against the law" to leave a child in the car.
Wake Up People!!! These are our kids suffering at the neglectful hands of parents.
Throw her in the slammer! No sympothy from me on this one!

so was the mother arrested for endangerment of a child? neglect? abuse? if you can't remember to take your kid with you, you definitely don't need to have kids!

Pray for the person who left the baby, and hope she learned a valuable lesson.

Pray for the mother?? - pray for that poor baby! With a mother like that-
It's just unreal to me!
Posted by mbs0606 on August 26, 2008 at 9:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I'll pray that God smacks her over the head and tells her to wake up. Then I'll pray that she gets some parenting classes. Which brings up the question. Will she get the baby back after this or will they investigate further on this mother? You could never be too careful.

I really don't understand this. Why on earth would you leave your baby in the car to run into a store??? I don't even leave my kids in the car when I'm returning a shopping cart at a store. I'm guessing that since it doesn't say she was arrested she probably wasn't. She's lucky the baby didn't die it was pretty hot and extremely humid yesterday.

mbs---it doesn't even say the baby was taken away from her. She probably took the baby home from the hospital.
Maybe ARN needs to find out more info...like
1. Was the mother arrested?
2. If she wasn't arrested, why?
3. Is the baby still with the mother?
4. Is the baby in the custody of CPS?
Posted by bigdaddy5 on August 26, 2008 at 10:20 a.m. (Suggest removal)
you know CPS took away kids on potential child abuse in the South Texas compound (not to say that was right by any means! - those people are weird), but when someone deliberately leaves a 6 month old baby in the car who suffers from heat exhaustion, nothing is done? I am shocked at our legal system!
Posted by abileneres on August 26, 2008 at 10:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Do you really need parenting classes to tell you that you shoud not leave your baby in a car?
I guess maybe some people do.
It just blows my mind how some parents treat their babies. But then again, look at the youth that our society has- can't even get your order right @ McD's! :O! That tells ya alot!!

How old was the mother? 22? She probably had her hands full with her other four kids and simply miscounted.
Posted by Texan55 on August 26, 2008 at 11:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)
These episodes of neglect are getting redundant. I say change the offense to a felony and put these kind of people away so they can't do anymore harm to the innocent.

Why wasn't the suspect named in the article? The post the names of other individuals.

YOU DONT NEED PARENTING LESSONS TO KNOW NOT TO LEAVE A BABY OR A CHILD OR ANYONE IN A CAR IF ITS HOT OUTSIDE..IM SURE SHE COULDNT HANDLE SITTING IN A HOT CAR FOR MORE THAN 5 MINUTES WHY WOULD SHE THINK HER BABY COULD. SHE WAS LAZY! LAZY! LAZY! AND OH YEA AGAINST THE LAW.

And the mother of the year award goes to...NOT HER. 2 deaths of kids in the last few weeks in Texas yet this idiot leaves her kid in the car? As Carlos Maincia would say - "Dee-dee-dee". Mom need to say this 5 times fast...I AM WE TODD IT. Poor kid. I hope the "mom" learns what an idiot she is and never does this again.

Since everyone is so outraged are you ready to do something about it? You have to have a background check, take a class and get a license to carry a gun, drive a car, and have a liquor license, but you only have to be biologically equipped to have a child. We know parental responsibilities aren't being taught in the public schools because we are worried about a career center and new shoelaces for the football team. When will we as a society put first things first?

I don't understand how a parent can leave a child in the car either. No matter what you have on your mind your child should come first. She should be punished. But I have a daughter that is 21 and has two small children.. She may be young but she is very responsible parent. So you cant say that our society of with young parents are all negligent I think some people should think before the open there mouth...

Funny how these women don't forget or leave the car without their cell phones ..wallets..purses huh??

Great point fred! I say hang the idiot. She has no business with a child. Yeah I will pray, for the BABY. I pray that she is safe from this mother and that she lives. What is next for this mom, "Oh, I went to answer my phone and didn't notice the water was hot, she was only in there for a minute!"
Posted by mbs0606 on August 26, 2008 at 2:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Maybe they need to hang signs out of every building in America. "DID YOU REMEMBER YOUR KID TODAY?"
Posted by SYLVIASWEETY on August 26, 2008 at 2:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I don't understand how someone could FORGET their child in a car or JUST FOR A MINUTE. Where is their mind? How can you not notice your back seat? The ones that leave them just for a minute are just as bad, because they know they are doing it. No EXCUSES, throw the book at 'em! Eye for an eye.... hmmmmm
Posted by maggiedog on August 26, 2008 at 2:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I cannot fathom anyone leaving small children alone in a car for any reason. Child abductions and Amber Alerts occur far too often and also the summer heat in West Texas. We all know how opressive it can be. CPS or whatever agency in Texas needs to take those children and place them with a responsible family.

I can't understand this rash of needless child deaths either. How do you forget your child is in the car? I can even (almost) understand forgetting to take your child to daycare, BUT when you get to your job how in the blue blazes do you not see, hear, KNOW there is a CHILD in the back seat? And then you forget for an ENTIRE WORK SHIFT!?!
Whoa, sorry. Blood pressure spiked for a minute there. I just know how precious my children are to me and I cannot fathom this level of selfish carelessness.
If you don't want to take care of them, QUIT HAVING THEM!!!

I totally agree Voodoo. I am pregnant now and I was at a doc appt last time and someone was telling me how this was her last because medicaid/medicare, don't remember which, would pay for her to have her tubes tied since this was her third. I was like ok let me go pick my jaw up off the floor.

its a vicious cycle with the "real" people paying for the stupid people of the world like this lady with my tax dollars! its a learned stupid! carlos mencia - "duh. Duh-duh, duh duh."
Posted by mbs0606 on August 26, 2008 at 5:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Okay first off, someone already quoted Carlos Mencia.
Second off, where do you people get that she has more than one child? She most likely does, but where do you get that in the story? The fact that she is 22 with a child or is hispanic? So are we discriminating on her age or race? And she's on medicaid? Hmm.. I didn't see anywhere in the story about what money she makes or if she slept around and was getting condoms when she left her baby. Yes, she was stupid for her action but don't DARE judge someone because of her age or race.

some people jus take your baby with you and why dont lock her in the car for awhile.

I would never dream of leaving a dog in the car while going shopping in a store, much less a diamond necklace! And a child is worth twice what the jewelry would be! People need to seriously learn to think about the welfare of others! Would you want to sit in that car? Then maybe, just maybe, it would be a good idea not to leave your child! Other than the heat, a million different things can go wrong. What if another vehicle hit your and the kid needed immediate medical attention? Older kids can get up, move around and have been known to put a vehicle into gear. Sheesh! Grow up and take responsibility for the lives you created! If you do not want to take a kid into the store with you every time you go for at least the next sixteen years, don't have unprotected sex! Problem solved! You can live your selfish life and we would not have to pick up the pieces.

Well said Tumbleweed. Texan 55 has a good idea too. Just the publicity of enacting a law like that would surely educate the parents alot more than what they were taught growing up.
I would hope a judge would force her to register as a bad parent and wear a sign as an example. Neighborhoods should be aware of people like her. The sad thing is this kind of mentality is abundant in this age group and theres alot more out there.

This kind of mentality is abundant in this age group???????
It has nothing do to with her age. It has everything to do with her common sense and respect for her child.
Posted by rlc00b on August 28, 2008 at 8:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I don't think it has anything to do with her age, I had my first child at 19 and never would have dreamed of leaving him in the car while I ran into the grocery store. As mbs0606 said it has to do with common sense. Some people don't stop and think about the consequences of their actions and what their decision will do to others. It seems as if society is getting more selfish, she didn't want to take the baby in because it would slow her down, she didn't want to wake the baby up because it just got to sleep, whatever the reason she was only thinking of herself.

What is left to investigate? Too many times incidents have been reported and law enforcement has said that if they didn't see it happen then it would be too hard to prove. If the ARN report is correct, the cop saw the crime happen. He saw the child left in the hot car and apparently in need of medical care. Why was there no arrest?
There are stupid people who have babies every day. That is just a fact. This story isn't as much about a stupid mother as it is about a stupid reaction by law enforcement. There is ample proof that this mother is a danger to her child. She made a decision to potentially kill her child for the sake of her own convenience. That is criminal. When the stupid mothers realize that their rear end will be booked into the county jail for this behavior then it might actually stop. It is a visible crime with dire consequences. It has happened far too many times this summer. We can’t lock somebody up fast enough for driving around with 3 ounces of pot but this mother was sent home while an “investigation” continues? This is a justice system? There should have been an arrest reported in this story. The next time this stupid mother might not be so lucky. God help this kid. He/She doesn’t have a chance.

"The suspect was intoxicated and a danger to himself. The suspect was arrested for public intoxication."
How ironic?

So... what is the rest of the story on the investigation? This lady should be charged for more than injury to a child.
