Police investigating Jackson PTA theft

The Abilene Police Department is investigating how more than $2,000 came up missing from Jackson Elementary School Parent Teacher Association's accounts.

The money apparently came from a PTA-sponsored holiday gift fair late last year, said Kyle Ward, executive director of the state parent/teacher association. According to a police report filed by the president of the Jackson's PTA, the money was discovered missing in a June audit.

Between $2,300 and $3,000 of funds collected during the fair weren't deposited, Ward said. Such a theft is a state jail felony, punishable by 180 days to two years in prison and an optional fine of not more than $10,000.

The holiday gift fair is a fundraiser during which students bring money to school to purchase gifts for their friends and family. Last year's Holiday Shop was held the week of Dec. 10 to 14, according to a newsletter on the Jackson PTA's Web site.

Abilene police Det. Mike Moschetto confirmed that he is investigating a theft of money from the Jackson PTA but declined to release any details because the investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed.

"I can't confirm or deny that there are any suspects," he said. "I can only confirm that there was a report filed from Jackson PTA indicating a theft of funds."

The PTA was required to file a police report for insurance purposes, Ward said.

School officials and local PTA members declined to comment.

Last week the former president of the Early parent teacher organization was arrested on a charge of felony theft after allegedly stealing $8,000.

The theft was discovered when a new board took over the Parent Teacher Committee.

Kindra Gayle Riley, 29, was the past president of the Early PTC and controlled the committee's funds.

Numerous checks were written for cash and events that never took place. If convicted, Riley could face up to two years in state jail.

Come on people, do you have to go so low as to take money from a fund for school? My kids attend Jackson, and I must say this comes as a complete shock, knowing most of the people who are involved in the PTA. Times are rough for everybody, but abusing a position you have taken on to help better a school, then turn around and take money is beyond despicable. If and when they do find who is responsible for this, I hope the harshest action is taken. We all believe this will never happen to our school, or our kids, but then we are brought back to reality and reminded that nothing is sacred in this day and time.
