Maddux back in LA, in pennant race

LOS ANGELES -- Greg Maddux is back in Los Angeles for another stretch drive.

The Dodgers announced Tuesday that they have reacquired Maddux and cash considerations from San Diego. The Padres will receive two minor league players to be named or cash considerations.

The 42-year-old Maddux first came to the Dodgers late in the 2006 season, when he went 6-3 with a 3.30 ERA in 12 starts to help them win a wild-card berth.

This time, Los Angeles is dueling Arizona for the NL West lead.

AUTO RACING: Hornish gets new crew chief

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Travis Geisler replaced Chris Carrier as crew chief for rookie Sam Hornish Jr. in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on Tuesday.

Geisler, a 27-year-old mechanical engineering graduate from Vanderbilt, has been the race engineer for Ryan Newman's No. 12 Dodge. He played a key part in that team's Daytona 500 victory in February.

Hornish, a three-time IndyCar Series champion and the 2006 Indianapolis 500 winner, is trying to make the transition to stock cars. Hornish, driving the No. 77 Dodge, is 33rd in the season points and has a best finish of 13th in May at Charlotte.

BASEBALL: Yaz undergoes heart bypass surgery in Boston

BOSTON -- Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, the last player to hit for the Triple Crown, underwent heart bypass surgery Tuesday after experiencing chest pains.

The 68-year-old Yastrzemski was in surgery Tuesday evening after being admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital, said his spokesman, Dick Gordon.

The popular Yaz was an 18-time All-Star and spent his entire career with the Boston Red Sox, taking over left field for Ted Williams in 1961 and playing through 1983.

BASEBALL: No immediate surgery for Kinsler

ARLINGTON -- Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler might avoid season-ending surgery for a sports hernia after receiving an encouraging diagnosis from a specialist Tuesday.

Kinsler was examined by Dr. John Preskitt at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. Kinsler said the doctor told him there was probably no torn muscle in the left side of his groin area.

Kinsler was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday and will be examined again in a week. If he shows progress, there's a chance he could return to the lineup at the end of his DL stint.

Kinsler leads the majors in runs (102) and paces Texas in batting average (.319), doubles (41) and stolen bases (26).

FOOTBALL: Manning makes 1st appearance since surgery

INDIANAPOLIS -- Peyton Manning has attended his first practice with the Indianapolis Colts since he had knee surgery just over five weeks ago.

Manning accompanied the Colts to their first practice session at the new Lucas Oil Stadium on Tuesday. He wore a team jersey and shorts, with an elastic band around his left knee.

Manning didn't wear pads and didn't warm up with his teammates before the practice session.

"As to when I'll be back on the practice field, that's still to be determined," Manning said. "Obviously, the sooner, the better for me. My goal is to be back for the first game."

FOOTBALL: WR Chris Henry rejoins Bengals

CINCINNATI -- Wide receiver Chris Henry is back with the Cincinnati Bengals, four months after the team dumped him following his fifth arrest since 2005.

A team spokesman says Henry signed a contract Tuesday, but terms were not released.

Henry will have to serve a four-week NFL suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy before he can play this year.

Henry, who also was suspended for the first half of last season, has played in 35 games with 11 starts since being drafted from West Virginia in 2005. He has 88 catches for 1,370 yards and 17 touchdowns.
