Explosion at auto shop kills Hermleigh man

SNYDER -- An explosion at a Snyder auto shop killed an employee Sunday afternoon.

George Kent Groat, 37, of Hermleigh, was operating a cutting torch on a 55-gallon barrel at Quick Auto Service when the contents of the barrel exploded. The explosion blew the top off the barrel, striking Groat in the head.

The loud explosion was heard about 1 p.m. Sunday in the 800 block of 25th Street. Police received a call about 2:25 p.m. to respond to an accident.

Justice of the Peace Deborah Boyd was called to the scene, where Groat was pronounced dead.

Wright Colonial Funeral Home in Snyder is handling funeral arrangements. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 200 E. 37th St.

The service is 2 p.m. Thursday at Word Is Life Deliverance Church, 312 Coliseum Drive in Snyder.
