Cougars rumble over Eagles
The bad news for the Eagles is that Cooper had 57 of the 69 in a 57-12 rout of the Eagles, the worst defeat for either team in the 33-game series.
Cooper, 2-1-1 overall and 1-0 in District 4-5A, played its most complete game of the season, rolling up 515 yards of offense, limiting the Eagles to just 244 yards of offense and punting only once.
"I though this would be a close, hard-fought game," Cooper head coach Randy Allen said. "I thought the emotions of it would cause it to be close. But we needed this kind of game. It was the first complete game weve played; all facets of our team contributed to the win."
Meanwhile for the Eagles the game was 48 minutes of sheer frustration.
Cooper had an answer for nearly everything they tried.
After cutting the Cooper lead to 8-6 midway through the first quarter, AHS had but 159 yards of offense the rest of the way.
"Theres nothing you can say after that," AHS head coach Carlous Stone said. "They did what they were supposed to do, and we didnt. Thats the bottom line."
And speaking of line, the Cooper offensive line dominated the much smaller AHS defensive line, opening enough holes to allow Cooper running backs Mike Rose, Gabe King and Donnie Nicholson to collect 256 yards on 31 carries.
"The offensive line was super," said Rose, who retired midway through the third quarter after rushing for 177 yards. "Theyre the whole reason I was able to get half the yards I got. They were just blowing people off the ball."
And it didnt take long for that to start happening.
Rose got the scoring onslaught started on only Coopers second offensive play.
After a 6-yard carry on first down, he bolted through a gap in the middle of the Abilene High defense and went virtually untouched for a 57-yard touchdown. Cooper then faked the extra point and Zac Allen hit Kevin Brigham in the back of the end zone for an 8-0 CHS lead with only 3:09 elapsed in the contest.
But for the only time in the game the Eagles were able to respond.
Facing a third-and-7 from its 29, quarterback Richard Cortinaz hit Toby Moss on a quick slant pass, and he carried it 43 yards to the Cooper 28.
After a 10-yard run by Nathan Mays, Cortinaz hit David Chacon in the back of the end zone to cut the lead to 8-6.
"After they came back with that long pass and then the score, I thought, Here we go again," Coach Allen said. "It was starting out just like last year."
But Cooper wouldnt let that happen.
The Cougars scored on their next four possessions to take a 36-6 lead into the half.
The first TD drive ended when Allen hit Durham down the right sideline for a 27-yard touchdown.
Allen continued his assault on the AHS defense when he connected with Rose for a 5-yard scoring pass.
"We were able to jump on them early, and we didnt let up," Zac Allen said. "Anytime you have a cross-town rivalry, you expect it to be close. But we just didnt make any mistakes."
Leading 22-6 at the end of the quarter, Cooper did not let up.
Coopers first drive of the second quarter was an impressive eight-play, 77-yard drive that took only 3:01 off the clock.
Allen hooked up with Jason King twice in the drive, and kept around left end for a 37-yard gain.
The drive ended with an 8-yard scoring pass from Allen to Durham.
AHS, 0-4 and 0-1, was unable to do anything offensively, and was forced to punt the ball away with 6:16 left in the half.
Cooper needed only six plays to complete a 62-yard drive that made it 36-6.
Rose carried on four plays in the drive, the last a 16-yard touchdown run, his third TD of the first half.
AHS trailed 32-7 to Sweetwater two weeks ago and wound up on the short end of a 38-34 score. But there would be no miracles on this night.
"We felt like if we came out and played the second half the way we did against Sweetwater it could be the same scenario," Stone said.
But Cooper let the Eagles know early in the second half that there would be no comebacks.
On Coopers third play of the half, Allen hit Durham on a simple out pattern at the AHS 31, and after bouncing off a would-be AHS tackler, turned upfield and went the final 69 yards for the touchdown and a 43-6 lead.
The touchdown marked the first time in the history of the series that either team had crossed the 40-point barrier.
Coopers next score came with 3:41 left in the third when Allen hit Kobie Johnson from seven yards out and a 50-6 lead.
Abilene High scored on its first possession of the fourth quarter when Chris Jackson scored on an 8-yard TD run to make it 50-12.
AHS recovered the onside kick, but one play later, David Anderson intercepted a Richard Cortinaz pass at the CHS 15 and returned it 74 yards to the AHS 11. On the next play, safety-turned-quarterback Anderson threw an 11-yard TD pass to Bob Berg and the 57-12 final.
And in his worst dreams, Stone never thought it would be that bad.
"I really didnt think it would," he said. "But it seemed like every time we did something wed get a penalty and then wed be facing first-and-long or second-and-long. You cant do that and beat a good football team."
