May Defeated in Bid for State's Six-Man Crown
Brownwood The explosive Marathon Mustangs threw six touchdown
passes here Saturday night to crush May, 62-16 and win the state six
man football championship in Cen-tex Stadium.
Lonnie Salmon, a 140 pound junior, threw five of the touchdowns, hitting Simon Martinez three times. Leo Cavness and Ben Ramirez caught one each.
The contest was called with 4:24 remaining because of the 45-point scoring rule.
Both teams went into the contest unbeaten and May had a 16-14 lead with 6:11 left in the first quarter, thanks to a 78-yard kickoff return by Phil Mitchell.
However on the first play after the kickoff Ramirez raced 56 yards and Salmon passed to Martinez for 37 yards to make it 28-16.
Mitchell had scored the first May touchdown on a one yard run, and the two scores Saturday night gave him 61 for the year. Jerry Newman kicked after both touchdowns. Ramirez also scored two other touchdowns for Marathon and he passed to Martinez for the other score. Salmon kicked four extra points for Marathon.
Ramirez was the leading rusher for Marathon with 129 yards while Salmon hit 9 of 12 passes for 187 yards.
May never could get started after the first quarter and Mitchell was held for 113 yards. He had come into the contest with over 3000 yards this season.
The state championship was the 2nd in four years for Marathon. May was playing in its first title game.
