Knox City Wins State Title, 27-20
Greyhounds Overcome 20-0 Deficit
Weatherford The Knox City Greyhounds, who all year have taken a
mile when the opposition gave them an inch, made off with the Class A
state football title Friday night with a 27-20 win against the Bremond
Tigers.
Now, this wasnt your typical one-touchdown win. The Greyhounds had to come from a 20 (yes, 20)-0 deficit during the second quarter.
If the situation wasnt hopeless with six minutes left in the second quarter, it was certainly grim. Thats when quarterback Waynie Hutchinson took off on a 68-yard run on the option keeper and scored. Hutchinson missed the extra point and the Tigers still had a 20-6 lead, but the Greyhounds had proven something.
"We had been afraid of their speed, I think," said winning coach Tommy Sloan. "After that, we said, Waynie can outrun them. We can play with them."
And play with them the Greyhounds did.
Although the Greyhounds fumbled deep in their end of the field in the last two minutes of the half and Bremond recovered. However, the Tigers seemed more concerned with getting into the dressing room to escape to cold than with scoring again. They settled for a 29-yard field goal attempt that missed.
The Greyhounds came out in the second half and used the first four minutes of the second half driving 60 yards to move within a touchdown.
On third and seven at the 33, Hutchinson, who gained 110 yards on 17 carries, gained 17. On the next play, wide receiver Jerry Gutierrez beat James Watley on a post pattern and Hutchinson hit him for the touchdown. Hutchinsons kick made it 20-13 and momentum, as they say, had switched.
Within five minutes, Knox City tied the score at 20 with a one-yard run by Otis Lockhart and a Hutchinson kick. During the first minute of the final period, Hutchinson and Lockhart, who gained 100 yards on 22 carries, connected for a 20-yard gain on a screen pass on a third and 16 call. On the next play, Lockhart broke 18 yards for the winning score.
The Tigers started the game as if this title contest would be a joke. They drove 84 yards after the opening kickoff for the score as quarterback Brad Vann completed a 31-yard scoring pass to Andy Taylor. With 46 seconds left in the first quarter, Van Taylor scored from the seven and it was 14-0.
William Edwards closed the Bremond scoring with 6:43 left in the first half with a four-yard run. Who would have thought it? The Tigers generated exactly one first down in the second half and the Greyhounds intercepted two passes, one by Hutchinson and another by Kevin Eaton, while recovering a fumble.
The Tigers offense was killed when quarterback Vann was hurt throughout the second half.
"Oh, it definitely helped," Sloan said. "Anytime their star athlete goes out, it helps you."
But this was a different team in the second half, Knox City was.
"We decided at halftime," said defensive tackle Chad Whitley, "that we werent going to be embarrassed."
Chad neednt have worried on that count.
