Jayton collects 2nd state 6-man crown

After watching Jayton’s Trey Richey shred his defense for 450 yards and eight touchdowns, Christoval Coach Buddy Luce decided there is only one way to stop the senior running back.

"It’d probably take a 12-gauge shotgun," he said, shaking his head.

Richey put on a one-man show Friday night, leading the Jaybirds to their second consecutive Six-Man state championship with a 64-14 victory on a frozen Indian Stadium turf at McMurry College.

And the 2,000 fans who braved the freezing temperatures say one of the state’s most prolific runners at his best. Richey scored on runs of 11, 74, 4, 54, 6, 12, 7, and 9 yards as the Jaybirds put the Cougars away by the 45-point rule with 2:16 left in the third quarter.

It was Jayton’s 14th win of the season without a loss and its 28th in a row since joining the Six-Man ranks before the 1984 season. Christoval ends its season 13-1.

The ice-covered field and bitter cold temperatures never seemed to bother Richey, who had 319 yards and six touchdowns by halftime. The 160 pound senior carried the ball 28 times and completed another pass for 27 yards to account for all but nine of the Jaybirds’ total yardage.

"The first play was the only time I noticed it (the cold)," he said. "After that, it wasn’t that bad."

Maybe not bad for Richey and the Jaybirds. Christoval, however, had to endure the cold while taking a beating. Jayton scored on all nine of its possessions, and the closest the Cougars came was a 24-6 deficit with 8:33 left in the half.

Jayton led 44-14 at the half and the only question left was how long the game would last. Richey scored on a 7-yard run to make it 50-14, then let Richard Boswell score on a 16-yard run before ending the game with a 9-yard jaunt.

Richey, who had 2,210 yards and 49 touchdowns coming into the game, ran up most of his yardage on a simple sweep. He often cut back against the grain and found nothing but daylight.

"That all depends on how my line blocks," he said. "They block so well it’s pretty easy to find a crack."

"He’s just a super athlete," said Jayton Coach Phil Mitchell. "He never gets tired. He plays on every one of our specialty teams, plays defense and he never gets tired.

"But this is not a one-man show, by far. Our guys just block, block and block until the whistle blows."

Jayton’s defense also did its usual fine job, and was as much a part of ending the game early as Richey and the Offense. Christoval scored on a barreling, 27-yard run by Joe Lee and a 1-yard run by Philip Montalvo. After that, the Jaybirds shut down the Cougars.

"The defense played super," said Mitchell. "They (the Cougars) are big and strong and they overpowered us until we figured out what they were doing. They have a fine football team."

Richey said the 45-point rule was never talked about, although the Jaybirds only had to go into the fourth quarter three times this season.

"All we talked about was how they (the Cougars) have been bragging about what a great second-half team they were," he said. "We just wanted to outscore them and we got lucky and got the 45."
