Prison guards investigated

Seven Colorado City officers may face criminal charges

A group of corrections officers who work at a state prison in Colorado City could face criminal charges for allegedly bringing alcohol onto prison property, said Michelle Lyons, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Their names were not available late Friday.

Seven officers from the Wallace Unit, including one lieutenant, were under investigation by the Office of Inspector General, the investigative arm of the Texas prison system. They allegedly brought alcohol to an employee fish fry in late July, she said.

State law prohibits alcohol on prison grounds.

''Our units are tobacco and alcohol free,'' Lyons said. ''Although no inmates were involved, it's still against the law.''

No action has been taken, yet, she said. The lieutenant quit. Five of the six accused officers were served with notices Friday, informing them that they will be scheduled to go before a disciplinary board for a hearing regarding the investigation. Lyons said one officer was not served the notice because the officer was not at work Friday.

Lyons said the findings from the Office of Inspector General were turned over to the state's Special Prosecution Unit.

The unit investigates and prosecutes felony offenses committed by TDCJ prisoners and crimes committed by TDCJ employees.

The unit will decide whether to file criminal charges against the officers.

Lyons said an exact date has not been set for the disciplinary hearing, but it is expected to be held next week.
